Chiller Specification:

The Bulldog Gear Essentials Ice Bath Chiller provides automatic temperature-controlled cooling for compatible ice baths and recovery tubs.

Simply select your desired water temperature between 3°C and 45°C and the chiller circulates and cools the water to reach and maintain your chosen temperature.

No bags of ice. No guessing the temperature. Just set your temperature and let the chiller do the work.

Once the bath reaches your selected temperature, the chiller regulates the water temperature automatically, cooling as required to maintain your setting.

Control the chiller directly from the unit or remotely using the Smart App, allowing you to monitor and adjust your ice bath from your phone.

How Quickly Does It Cool?

Cooling time depends on water volume, starting water temperature, ambient temperature, insulation and whether the bath is covered.

The manufacturer's cooling test used 350 litres of water at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Water temperature reduced from approximately 42°C to 3°C in around 30 hours.

For a more representative example, once the test water reached approximately 25°C, the manufacturer's cooling curve indicates approximately:

Target Temperature 350L Bath
15°C ~6 hours
10°C ~11 hours
5°C ~19 hours
3°C ~24 hours

For our different bath sizes, estimated cooling times based on the manufacturer's 350L test are:

Target Temperature 300L Bath* 350L Bath 450L Bath*
15°C ~5 hours ~6 hours ~8 hours
10°C ~9–10 hours ~11 hours ~14 hours
5°C ~16 hours ~19 hours ~24 hours
3°C ~20–21 hours ~24 hours ~31 hours

*300L and 450L figures are estimates extrapolated from the manufacturer's 350L cooling test and are not independently tested cooling times. Actual performance will vary according to starting water temperature, ambient conditions, insulation, cover use and installation.

In typical UK conditions, ambient temperatures are often below the 25°C test environment, which can reduce the heat entering the bath and improve cooling performance compared with hotter conditions.

For best performance, we recommend keeping the bath covered when not in use.

Does It Maintain the Selected Temperature?

Yes.

Once you've selected your desired water temperature, the chiller automatically controls the cooling system to reach and maintain that temperature.

This means you don't need to empty and refill the bath or add bags of ice before every session. Once your bath is cold, the chiller can maintain the water at your preferred temperature ready for your next plunge.

The temperature can be set between 3°C and 45°C.

Wi-Fi & App Control

Connect the chiller to the Smart App using Wi-Fi and control your ice bath remotely from your smartphone.

From the app you can:

  • View the current water temperature
  • Adjust your target temperature
  • Switch the chiller on or off
  • Lock the controls
  • View the temperature curve

Can It Be Used Outside?

The chiller is rated IPX4, providing protection against splashing water.

However, IPX4 does not mean the unit is fully waterproof.

When installed outdoors, the chiller should be positioned in a sheltered, well-ventilated location protected from direct rain and sunlight.

The chiller should not be immersed, sprayed or deliberately exposed to water, and adequate airflow should always be maintained around the unit.

The manufacturer recommends maintaining approximately 100cm clearance around the ventilation areas to ensure sufficient airflow.

Winter Use

If temperatures are expected to fall to freezing, disconnect the pipes and completely drain the water from the chiller to prevent freezing water from damaging internal components.

How Much Does It Cost to Run?

The UK 220–240V model has a nominal input power of approximately 430W, with manufacturer-listed operating input ranging from 40–630W depending on demand.

As an example, at an electricity price of 25p/kWh:

430W = approximately 11p per hour while drawing 430W.

The chiller doesn't necessarily operate continuously at its nominal power once the target temperature has been reached.

Actual running costs will therefore depend on:

  • Target water temperature
  • Ambient temperature
  • Bath size
  • Insulation
  • Whether the bath is covered
  • Frequency of use

Using a cover when the bath isn't being used will help minimise heat transfer and improve efficiency.

Built-In Water Filter

The chiller includes an integrated water filter, helping to protect the pump and maintain water flow.

The manufacturer recommends checking and cleaning the filter once per week for optimum performance.

Cleaning the Filter

  1. Switch off and disconnect the chiller from the power supply.
  2. Close the inlet and outlet water valves.
  3. Remove the built-in filter.
  4. Rinse and clean the filter.
  5. Reinstall the filter.
  6. Reopen the inlet and outlet valves.
  7. Check that water can circulate correctly before switching the chiller back on.

Always switch the chiller off before cleaning the filter.

Keeping Your Ice Bath Water Clean

How frequently the bath water needs changing depends on how often the bath is used and by how many people.

To help keep the water cleaner for longer, we recommend:

  • Showering before entering the bath
  • Keeping the bath covered when not in use
  • Cleaning the built-in filter weekly
  • Regularly checking water condition
  • Replacing the water whenever necessary

If the chiller isn't going to be used for an extended period, the manufacturer recommends draining the water from the unit.
